Viniou Reviews

Ivan Dolac 2018, crafted on the island of Hvar in Dalmatia, is a red wine showcasing the region’s characterful style. Made predominantly from Plavac Mali, a grape renowned in Croatia for its deep colour and robust structure, this cuvée expresses ripe Mediterranean influences with an inviting sense of place. The 2018 vintage benefited from an extended, sunny growing season, allowing a full expression of ripe fruit and a balanced tannic profile. Winemaking in this area tends to honour tradition, favouring manual harvesting on steep, sun-drenched slopes and careful vinification to preserve the unique aromatics and structure that Plavac Mali is known for—usually manifesting as dark berry fruit, dried fig, warm spice and the subtle touch of coastal herbs.

Hvar, sitting off the Dalmatian coast, partakes in the region’s long viticultural history. Its mountainous, limestone-rich soils, paired with the intense Mediterranean sun and persistent island winds, provide ideal conditions for native grape varieties. Vines here are often grown on slopes facing the Adriatic, benefiting from direct exposure to sunlight and cooling sea breezes, which helps in maintaining both ripeness and freshness in the wines. The region’s deep-rooted tradition in winemaking dates back millennia, tracing influences from Greek and Roman settlers, and its coves and terraces are still celebrated for producing some of the finest Croatian reds.

This style of wine, with its sturdy body and expressive fruit, lends itself beautifully to rich and flavourful dishes. For a truly local experience, consider grilled lamb, wild game, or the regional specialty pašticada—a slow-cooked beef stew in red wine sauce. Tomato-based pasta, mature cheeses or dishes with Mediterranean herbs, such as rosemary and bay, are excellent companions.

Serve this red slightly below room temperature, ideally at 16-18°C, to best showcase its complex character and to allow the nuances of Plavac Mali to shine. Decanting for an hour before serving can further enhance its aromatic profile.
