Grgić Pelješac 2020 is a fine example of a Croatian red wine from the Pelješac peninsula in Dalmatia. Made predominantly from the Plavac Mali grape, the flagship red variety of the region, this vintage showcases the grape’s robust character and distinctive personality. The 2020 vintage stands out for its generous fruit profile and structured tannins, owing to a warm growing season that allowed for optimal ripeness. The vineyards of Pelješac are graced by steep slopes overlooking the Adriatic, with poor, stony soils that force the vines to dig deep, resulting in concentrated flavours and remarkable mineral tension in the final wine. Traditional vinification methods, often with a lengthy maceration, emphasise the grape’s deep colour, aromas of dark cherry, plum, Mediterranean herbs, and a subtle note of sea spray, reflecting the proximity to the coast.
Dalmatia is one of Croatia’s oldest and most renowned wine regions, with a winemaking pedigree that stretches back to Ancient Greek and Roman times. The Peninsula of Pelješac, in particular, is celebrated for its rugged landscape and sun-drenched slopes. The Mediterranean climate—marked by hot, dry summers and mild winters—ensures perfect conditions for ripening red varieties, especially Plavac Mali. The area is defined by its karstic limestone soils, which contribute a distinctive saline minerality and elegance to its wines. Historically, the region’s isolation fostered strong local traditions and unique viticultural practices that are still respected today.
For food pairings, Grgić Pelješac 2020 shines alongside grilled or roasted meats, particularly lamb or beef—dishes that echo the heartiness of Dalmatian cuisine. It is also a perfect accompaniment to regional specialities such as Pasticada (Dalmatian beef stew), hard sheep’s cheeses, or dishes featuring Mediterranean herbs and black olives. The wine’s vibrant acidity and firm tannic structure allow it to stand up to flavourful tomato-based dishes or even game.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least half an hour before serving, and present it at a temperature of 16-18°C. This will bring out its full aromatic complexity and allow the tannins to soften, providing a balanced and rewarding tasting experience.
