Viniou Reviews

Horvat's Cuvée Pušipel is a dry white wine produced in the upland region of mountainous Croatia, a terroir less familiar to international wine enthusiasts but increasingly recognised for its structured and aromatic whites. The Pušipel grape, locally cherished and known in other parts of Central Europe as Furmint, thrives in the region's hillside vineyards. While this cuvée is non-vintage, it boasts the freshness of the current harvest, benefiting from careful vinification that preserves primary fruit aromas and a brisk, lively profile. The vinification likely emphasises stainless steel fermentation to highlight the variety's natural acidity and mineral character, rather than masking it with excessive oak.

The mountainous region of Croatia, often overshadowed by the more renowned coastal areas, boasts a continental climate marked by warm summers and crisp, cold winters. These conditions, coupled with well-draining marl and limestone soils, lend both structure and striking freshness to the local wines. Viticulture here is shaped by centuries of tradition, with native grapes like Pušipel at its core, resulting in wines that reflect both the landscape and the cultural heritage of the region.

In terms of food pairings, the vibrant acidity and delicacy of Horvat's Cuvée Pušipel make it a superb companion to freshwater fish such as grilled trout or perch, especially when dressed with a splash of lemon and fresh herbs. The wine's citrusy and mineral notes also complement soft cheeses like škripavac, as well as lighter poultry dishes and classic Croatian appetisers such as štrukli, a baked pastry filled with cheese and cream.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine well-chilled at around 8-10°C. This temperature preserves its aromatic clarity and invigorating mouthfeel, ensuring that the lively fruits and refreshing minerality come to the fore. Pour into clear, mid-sized white wine glasses to appreciate its delicate bouquet and elegant structure.
