Bolfan Cuvée Primus Traminac 2018 is a semi-sweet white wine from the Zagorje region in Central Croatia. Crafted predominantly from the Traminac grape (known internationally as Gewürztraminer), this vintage expresses the hallmark characteristics of its variety: expressive aromatics, delicate spice, and a lush, rounded mouthfeel. The 2018 growing season in Zagorje was defined by moderate temperatures and a gentle ripening period, allowing the grapes to reach optimal maturity while retaining vital acidity. Vinification focuses on gentle pressing and cool fermentation to preserve the intricate floral and lychee aromas for which Traminac is renowned. The result is a wine with a brilliant pale gold colour, aromas of rose petal, ripe peach, and exotic spice, and a palate that balances opulent fruit sweetness with a refreshing, zesty acidity.
Zagorje, in the heart of Central Croatia, is a hilly and verdant region shaped by a continental climate of cold winters and warm, sunny summers. The soils here are a mosaic of clay-limestone and loess, offering excellent drainage and mineral content conducive to aromatic whites. The area’s viticultural tradition dates back centuries, influenced by both Austro-Hungarian and Balkan legacies, which is reflected in the prominence of Central European grape varieties like Traminac. The local terroir, with its cool nights and misty mornings, favours the development of complex aromatics and a vibrant acid structure in the wines.
Cuvée Primus Traminac 2018 pairs harmoniously with aromatic and delicately spiced dishes. Consider serving it alongside dishes such as mildly spiced Thai green curry, Moroccan chicken with preserved lemon, or aromatic Indian biryani. For a more traditional Croatian experience, try pairing with turkey or duck served with mlinci, or freshwater fish in a gentle herbal sauce. The wine’s natural sweetness and fragrance also make it a fine partner for soft goat cheese or a summer fruit tart.
For optimal tasting, serve this wine chilled but not overly cold, ideally between 8-10°C. Allow it a few minutes in the glass to open up its bouquet, and enjoy its evolving aromatic spectrum with each sip.
