Haras de Pirque Albis 2020 is a fine red blend from the historic Maule Valley in Chile, one of the country’s oldest and most celebrated wine regions. The Albis cuvée typically brings together Bordeaux varietals—most commonly Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère, sometimes complemented by Merlot—with grapes sourced from sustainably-farmed estate vineyards. The 2020 vintage benefited from a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry days and cool nights, which translated into concentrated, well-structured wines. In the cellar, careful vinification with temperature-controlled fermentation is followed by ageing in French oak barrels, contributing layers of complexity, spice, and velvety tannins to the finished wine.
Nestled in central Chile, the Maule Valley has long been recognised as a cradle of viticulture dating back to the colonial era. The region's rich alluvial soils, composed of clay, gravel, and sand, provide excellent drainage while retaining enough humidity to support healthy vine growth. With its proximity to both the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, Maule benefits from significant diurnal temperature variation, helping grapes to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity—traits that define the expressive character of this blend. The valley enjoys a long growing season, allowing for gradual ripening and the slow development of complex flavours in the fruit.
A powerful yet refined wine like Haras de Pirque Albis 2020 is perfectly suited for pairing with roasted red meats such as beef rib-eye or lamb shoulder, ideally seasoned with rosemary or served with jus. It will also shine with dishes that incorporate earthy mushrooms or savoury herb sauces. Traditional Chilean cuisine, like pastel de choclo (corn pie with minced meat), makes for a delightful match, drawing out the wine’s spicy, dark-fruited nuances. For vegetarian options, try it alongside aubergine lasagne or a hearty lentil stew.
To experience the wine at its best, serve slightly below room temperature, ideally between 16 and 18°C. Decanting for around an hour before serving will allow the wine's aromatic complexity and structure to fully reveal themselves.
