Viniou Reviews

El Esteco Cuvée Fincas Notables Malbec 2023 hails from the Calchaquí Valleys in the province of Salta, Argentina, a region renowned for producing expressive, high-altitude red wines. While the label suggests Malbec as the predominant grape variety, any blend details should be treated with a degree of caution; still, one can expect a style aligned with Malbec from this extraordinary terroir. Wines from Calchaquí Valleys, especially in youthful vintages such as 2023, are typically vibrant and aromatic, offering deeply coloured pours alongside concentrated dark fruit notes, subtle florals, and a notable freshness—traits gained from the pronounced day-night temperature swings of the region's high vineyards. The winemaking philosophy at El Esteco often preserves the natural character of the grape, with judicious use of oak lending structure without overwhelming the purity of fruit.

The Calchaquí Valleys sit between 1,700 and over 2,500 metres above sea level, making them some of the highest winegrowing areas in the world. The unique combination of extreme altitude, intense sunlight, and poor, sandy soils yields grapes with a thick skin and concentrates aromas, tannins, and acidity. Rainfall is scarce, resulting in low yields and remarkable concentration. The region’s wine-growing history stretches back centuries, but in recent decades, wineries like El Esteco have taken ambitious steps to showcase Salta’s remarkable potential—particularly for Malbec, but also for Torrontés and other varieties.

A wine of this profile calls for hearty pairings. Traditional Argentine beef, especially grilled steaks or asado, is a natural companion for a structured Malbec. Roasted lamb, aged hard cheeses, or even spicy empanadas from the northwest region can also shine alongside this wine. The dark fruit core and supple tannins can equally grace more international cuisine: think venison, spiced aubergine, or slow-roasted root vegetables.

For optimal enjoyment, serve slightly below room temperature, ideally at 16-18°C. Consider decanting for half an hour to allow the bouquet and palate to open fully, revealing the hallmark intensity and elegance of Salta’s high-altitude reds.
