Catena Zapata’s Cuvée Catena Alta Malbec 2020 is a striking example of Mendoza’s world-class red wines. The wine displays a deep, vibrant colour and typically showcases intense aromas of blackberries, plums, and floral hints, supported by subtle notes of spice and cocoa from careful oak ageing. While Malbec is the traditional backbone of this cuvée, expect a harmonious and generous palate, with plush tannins, a juicy dark fruit core, and a fresh, lingering finish—a hallmark of high-altitude viticulture and meticulous selection of grapes.
Mendoza is Argentina’s leading wine region, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Andes. The altitude here, often exceeding 900 metres above sea level, allows for sharp temperature contrasts between day and night, helping to preserve acidity and develop aromatic complexity in the grapes. The region’s alluvial soils, a mosaic of sand, clay, and gravel, drain well and promote deep root growth, contributing additional structure and minerality. Historically, Malbec found a new home in Mendoza after arriving from France in the 19th century, rapidly becoming Argentina’s signature grape through its adaptability and expressive style.
With its rich texture and bold fruit profile, this Malbec is best suited to hearty dishes. Classic Argentine pairings include grilled ribeye steak with chimichurri sauce or lamb chops, playing to the wine’s natural affinity for charred, savoury flavours. For a regional experience, try empanadas filled with spiced beef or slow-cooked beef stew, which will complement the Malbec’s fruit and spice notes. The wine’s versatility also extends to Mediterranean fare, such as roasted aubergine or ratatouille.
For optimal enjoyment, decanting for about an hour will help open up the bouquet and smooth the palate. Serve at 16–18°C to best appreciate its depth, freshness, and fine tannic structure. This is a wine with the potential to develop further complexity over the next several years.
