Viniou Reviews

Catena Zapata’s Nicasia Vineyard 2021 is an outstanding Argentinian red, hailing from one of the finest terroirs in Mendoza. Crafted primarily from Malbec grapes, this cuvée exemplifies the potential of high-altitude vineyards in the Uco Valley. The 2021 vintage was shaped by cooler-than-average temperatures and a dry growing season, factors that contributed to the wine’s balance, freshness, and aromatic complexity. The Nicasia vineyard itself sits at around 1,095 metres above sea level in Altamira, where soils are composed of sandy loam mixed with limestone and stones, ensuring superb drainage and a marked minerality. Vinification for this wine typically involves careful hand harvesting, extended maceration, and ageing in French oak, which imparts finesse and subtle toasty notes alongside vibrant fruit.

The Mendoza region is Argentina’s powerhouse of viticulture, producing over 70% of the country's wine. Its unique location by the foothills of the Andes means each vineyard can benefit from intense daytime sunshine and cool nights, perfect for developing grapes with ripe tannins and vivid flavours. The soils, often stony and alluvial, reflect both the region’s riverside origins and its dynamic volcanic past, contributing to the structure and minerality found in Mendoza wines. The history of winemaking here draws on a rich tapestry of European know-how, especially from Italian and Spanish immigrants, melded with local innovation and a deep respect for the region’s natural assets.

For food pairings, Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard Malbec is exceptionally suited to robust dishes. Traditional Argentinian asado, grilled beef rib-eye or flank steak, would be ideal, allowing the wine’s notes of ripe black fruit and spice to shine. Lamb chops, slow-cooked beef cheeks, or hearty stews are also excellent choices. For a local touch, empanadas mendocinas or provoleta (grilled cheese with herbs) would make delicious accompaniments.

To best appreciate this wine’s complexity, serve it at 16-18°C after decanting for at least an hour. This allows the wine to fully express its layered aromas of black cherry, violet, cocoa, and a hint of mineral graphite, while ensuring the tannins are supple and the finish harmonious.
