Viniou Reviews

Viña Cobos Cuvée Cobos Malbec 2018 is an exceptional expression of Argentine Malbec, crafted in the famed Mendoza region. The 2018 vintage benefits from ideal growing conditions, with warm days and cool, high-altitude nights, allowing the Malbec grapes to reach optimal ripeness while retaining freshness and vibrancy. This wine reveals a deep, concentrated ruby colour, offering an aromatic bouquet of ripe blackberries, cassis, violets, and hints of sweet spice and cocoa. On the palate, it showcases plush, velvety tannins, a generous body, and flavours of dark plum, blueberry, subtle tobacco, and a touch of vanilla from refined oak ageing. The finish is long and elegant, confirming its pedigree and careful vinification.

Mendoza, Argentina's most renowned wine region, sits in the foothills of the Andes, providing an impressive altitude that ranges from 800 to over 1,100 metres above sea level. The region benefits from abundant sunshine and a semi-arid climate, with the Andes acting as a rain shadow, creating dry conditions that naturally limit disease. The soils here are predominantly alluvial, made up of sand, clay, and river stones, which provide excellent drainage and contribute to the intense concentration and minerality of the wines. Mendoza's historical significance in Argentine viticulture cannot be understated; it is the heartland from which Malbec has risen to global prominence, thanks to the unique interplay of climate, soil, and winemaking tradition.

This robust and expressive Malbec is incredibly versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with classic Argentine dishes such as asado (grilled meats), empanadas filled with spiced beef, or a rich beef stew. The wine’s fruit-forward profile and supple structure also complement braised lamb, mushroom risotto, or even dark chocolate desserts. For a regional match, try it with provoleta, a traditional grilled cheese starter with herbs.

To fully appreciate the complexity and aromatic intensity of this Malbec, serve it at a temperature of 16-18°C. Decanting for 1-2 hours before serving is highly recommended, allowing the wine to open up and express its full aromatic potential and layered palate. Enjoy now or over the next decade as it evolves in bottle.
