Mascota Vineyards’ Cuvée Gran Mascota 2021 is a striking red wine from the renowned Mendoza region in Argentina. Comprised of a blend of noble red grapes, typical for this area (often Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and possibly a hint of Petit Verdot or Syrah), the wine displays both richness and elegance. The 2021 vintage, marked by favourable weather conditions, allowed for slow and balanced grape maturation, resulting in a concentrated and expressive cuvée. Meticulous vinification includes hand-harvesting, controlled fermentation to preserve vibrant aromatics, and ageing in French and American oak barrels, bringing additional layers of complexity and finesse.

The Mendoza region sits on the eastern slopes of the Andes, at altitudes ranging from 600 to over 1,000 metres above sea level. This unique elevation combines with a semi-arid continental climate, where plentiful sunshine and significant diurnal temperature variation help grapes develop intense colour and ripe tannins while preserving acidity. The soils are mostly alluvial—sandy, stony, and perfectly drained—which restricts vine vigour and further concentrates flavours. This Gran Mascota is a superb companion to robust meat dishes reflecting Argentine traditions. It pairs beautifully with grilled beef ribeye or lamb, as well as classic asado barbecue. The wine’s structure and fruit intensity also complement rich stews, such as beef empanadas or slow-braised oxtail. For a regional touch, try it with provoleta (grilled cheese with herbs), or even a spicy chimichurri-marinated pork.

For optimal pleasure, serve this wine at 16–18°C. Decanting for about an hour before serving will allow its bouquet of dark fruits, violet, cocoa, and subtle spices to open up fully. Enjoy it over the next five to eight years to appreciate the evolution of its structure and aromatics.
