Veltlínské zelené, known internationally as Grüner Veltliner, is a white grape variety celebrated for its vibrant expression and versatility. On the nose, it often displays aromas of green apple, white pepper, grapefruit, and subtle hints of fresh herbs. The palate typically delivers a crisp acidity, with flavours ranging from citrus fruits to pear, green plum, and occasionally a hallmark note of spice or wet stone minerality. The finish is generally refreshing and lively, making it especially appealing to lovers of aromatic white wines.
While its homeland is Austria, particularly the regions of Lower Austria — including Wachau, Kamptal, and Kremstal — Veltlínské zelené is also grown with distinction in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, where it forms a cornerstone of local viticulture.
The grape produces a range of wine styles, from light, unoaked and youthful expressions brimming with freshness, to more structured, barrel-matured versions with greater complexity and ageing potential.
Recommended pairings include light dishes such as grilled fish, seafood, fresh salads, goat’s cheese, and classic Central European fare like schnitzel or asparagus, all of which complement the grape’s vibrant acidity and spice.
