White Grapes

Girgentina is an indigenous white grape variety predominantly cultivated in Malta, and is considered integral to the island’s winemaking heritage. The grape yields wines with a delicate aromatic profile characterised by fresh citrus notes, subtle tropical fruit hints, and a floral undertone, often complemented by gentle minerality derived from Malta’s limestone-rich soils. On the palate, Girgentina wines are typically light-bodied and crisp, offering refreshing acidity, flavours of green apple, lemon zest, and a graceful saline finish that mirrors their maritime environment.

While Malta’s coastal vineyards remain the grape’s principal stronghold, Girgentina is seldom found outside the archipelago. The grape is usually vinified as a mono-varietal dry white, but it also features in blends, sometimes paired with another native grape, Gellewza. Some producers experiment with sparkling interpretations, which highlight the grape’s natural vibrancy and freshness.

Girgentina pairs splendidly with the Mediterranean cuisine of its homeland. It complements fresh seafood, shellfish, grilled fish and lightly seasoned salads, while its brisk acidity balances richer dishes such as creamy pasta or poultry with lemon. Its subtlety also renders it an excellent choice for antipasti, soft cheeses, and herb-infused appetisers.
