Red Grape Variety

The Alphonse grape, sometimes referred to as Alphonse Lavallée, is a versatile, dark-skinned variety primarily grown in regions with warm, temperate climates. Aromatically, Alphonse tends to offer a bouquet of ripe, juicy black fruits such as blackberry, plum, and black cherry, frequently underpinned by subtle floral notes and a delicate earthiness. On the palate, its wines are typically medium-bodied with soft tannins, a vibrant acidity, and flavours echoing its aromatic profile—think lush, sweet fruit with a hint of spice on the finish.

Mainly cultivated in the South of France, North Africa (notably Morocco and Algeria), as well as in some Eastern European and Middle Eastern countries, Alphonse thrives in sun-rich terroirs. Although best known as a table grape, when vinified, it commonly produces approachable red wines and occasional rosés, appreciated for their freshness and fruit-forward character.

Alphonse-based wines pair splendidly with lightly spiced lamb, grilled Mediterranean vegetables, and soft cheeses such as brie or camembert. Their fruitiness and balanced acidity also make them a pleasant companion to charcuterie boards or classic bistro fare like coq au vin.
