Muscaris is a modern hybrid grape variety, developed in Germany by crossing Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains with Solaris. This grape exhibits a captivating aromatic profile, characterised by prominent notes of elderflower, rose petals, grapefruit, and ripe stone fruits, with a subtle undertone reminiscent of nutmeg and fresh herbs. On the palate, Muscaris wines are typically vibrant and refreshing, displaying crisp acidity balanced by a gentle, rounded texture and a hint of residual sweetness in some styles.
Muscaris is primarily cultivated in cool-climate European wine regions, notably in Germany and Austria, but also in Switzerland and the United Kingdom. These areas suit its early ripening and high disease resistance, particularly to fungal infections, making it an attractive choice for sustainable viticulture.
Wines produced from Muscaris are most commonly varietal whites, ranging from dry to off-dry styles. They are well known for their aromatic intensity and versatility, sometimes used in aromatic blends or in sparkling wine production.
Muscaris pairs exceptionally well with a variety of dishes, including lightly spiced Asian cuisine, fresh goat’s cheese, seafood salads, and white meats such as chicken or turkey. Its fragrant character also complements vegetarian dishes featuring herbs or citrus, offering a harmonious and elegant dining experience.
