The Quebranta grape, indigenous to Peru, is renowned for its unique aromatic and flavour profile. Characterised by medium intensity aromas, Quebranta typically offers notes of ripe tropical fruits such as banana and melon, complemented by subtle hints of dried fruits and a delicate herbal nuance. On the palate, it is generally smooth, with a medium body and marked by a refreshing acidity that balances its gentle fruitiness. The grape is primarily cultivated in the warm, arid coastal valleys of Peru, particularly in the Ica and Lima regions, where the climate imparts a distinctive character to the fruit.
Quebranta is most often used to produce Pisco, Peru’s celebrated brandy, where it delivers a silky texture, expressive fruit flavours, and a clean, elegant finish. While not commonly vinified as a table wine, experimental dry and semi-sweet styles can occasionally be found, demonstrating a pleasant fruit-driven profile with subtle earthy undertones.
Ideal food pairings include ceviche, grilled seafood, Peruvian rotisserie chicken, and mild cheeses. The grape’s aromatic intensity and balanced acidity make it especially suitable alongside dishes with citrus or herbal elements, enhancing both the wine and the food experience.
