Vranac is a distinguished red grape variety native to the Balkans, most notably flourishing in Montenegro, North Macedonia, and parts of Serbia. Renowned for its deep, nearly opaque colour, Vranac wines offer an expressive and complex aromatic profile. On the nose, expect notes of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, blackcurrants, and plums, interwoven with hints of Mediterranean herbs, spice, and subtle earthy undertones. On the palate, Vranac delivers a full-bodied structure, displaying generous dark fruit flavours, firm yet refined tannins, and vibrant acidity, often finishing with a touch of liquorice or dark chocolate.
Vranac is the signature grape of Montenegro’s Lake Skadar region and is widely cultivated throughout the Balkan Peninsula. It is typically crafted as a dry red wine, though it can also be found in richer, oak-aged expressions or as a robust, fruit-forward young wine.
These wines exhibit excellent ageing potential, developing additional complexity and elegance over time. Vranac pairs exceptionally well with hearty Balkan cuisine as well as grilled red meats, game, mature cheeses, and dishes featuring roasted vegetables or spicy sauces, making it a versatile choice for diverse gastronomic experiences.
