Kratosija is an ancient red grape variety primarily cultivated in the Balkans, with its origins traced to what is now North Macedonia and Montenegro. It produces wines displaying a vibrant ruby hue and a lively aromatic profile, characterised by red and black cherry, cranberry, and wild berry notes, often accompanied by subtle floral and spicy undertones. On the palate, Kratosija offers medium body and refreshing acidity, with moderate tannins and flavours echoing the nose, balanced by hints of forest floor and delicate herbaceous nuances.
The main wine regions producing Kratosija include the Tikveš and Skopje regions of North Macedonia, as well as Montenegrin appellations such as Lake Skadar. Winemakers commonly craft Kratosija in both varietal and blended expressions, ranging from youthful, fruit-driven reds intended for early consumption to more structured, oak-aged wines capable of short to medium-term aging.
Kratosija pairs exceptionally well with Mediterranean cuisine—think grilled lamb, roast pork, or herbed poultry. It is also a suitable companion for hard cheeses, charcuterie, and traditional Balkan dishes such as moussaka or stuffed peppers, with its acidity and brightness cutting through rich and savoury flavours.
