Vranec is a distinguished red grape variety predominantly grown in North Macedonia, also found in Montenegro and Serbia. Renowned for its deeply coloured, full-bodied wines, Vranec typically offers an aromatic profile bursting with dark berries such as blackberries and blackcurrants, complemented by nuances of ripe cherries, plums, and subtle undertones of spice, chocolate, and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, these wines display robust tannins, refreshing acidity and an impressive structure, with a lingering, fruit-driven finish. The primary viticultural regions include the Tikveš and Veles districts in North Macedonia, where the grape thrives in the warm continental climate.
Vranec is most commonly vinified as a dry red wine but can also be found in semi-dry or barrique-aged styles. Its youthful expressions are vibrant and aromatic, while extended oak ageing yields more complex and rounded wines with greater ageing potential. Vranec pairs exceptionally well with hearty cuisine; it is an excellent match for grilled red meats, lamb stews, aged cheeses, and rich game dishes. The grape’s expressive character and structure also complement dishes seasoned with Mediterranean spices and offer an ideal partner for robust, savoury flavours.
