Côt, known internationally as Malbec, is a distinguished red grape variety celebrated for its deep colour, intense aromas, and robust character. Originating from south-west France, particularly the Cahors region, Côt is now widely cultivated in various winegrowing areas, including the Loire Valley and select sites across south-western France. The grape produces wines with a remarkable aromatic profile featuring ripe black fruits such as plum and blackberry, complemented by floral notes of violet and hints of spice, leather, and earthy undertones. On the palate, Côt wines are typically medium to full-bodied, with generous tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, persistent finish. While French expressions of Côt tend towards rusticity and structure, they maintain freshness and elegance, making them excellent candidates for ageing. Côt is vinified into both varietal wines and blends, often imparting depth and complexity. For food pairings, Côt’s tannic backbone and bold flavours excel alongside hearty dishes, such as grilled red meats, slow-cooked lamb, game, or robust stews. Mature cheeses and earthy vegetarian preparations also complement its character, offering a versatile and rewarding experience at the table.
