Vernaccia is a distinguished grape variety primarily associated with the region of Tuscany, most notably around the medieval town of San Gimignano. This white varietal produces wines that are celebrated for their bright straw-yellow colour, crisp acidity, and intriguing aromatic profile. On the nose, Vernaccia often displays notes of white flowers, green apple, citrus zest, and subtle undertones of almond and mineral. The palate is lively and refreshing, featuring flavours of ripe pear, yellow apple, a touch of grapefruit, and a characteristic saline minerality, which lends the wine a lingering, clean finish.
The most renowned exponent is Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, though smaller plantings exist in Sardinia and Marche, where the grape may produce styles that are fuller-bodied or influenced by oak ageing. Vernaccia wines are typically dry and medium-bodied, with some premium examples seeing short periods in oak to enhance texture and complexity.
These wines excel as an aperitif and pair wonderfully with a range of foods, including shellfish, grilled fish, light seafood pastas, risotto with asparagus or artichokes, poultry dishes, and mild cheeses. Vernaccia’s zesty acidity and mineral finesse make it a versatile companion for Mediterranean cuisine.
