Gewurztraminer is a highly aromatic grape variety renowned for its intensely perfumed bouquet, often displaying notes of lychee, rose petal, Turkish delight, and hints of exotic spices such as ginger and clove. On the palate, it offers a rich, full-bodied texture balanced by moderate acidity, with flavours often mirroring its aromas alongside subtle touches of honey, ripe tropical fruits, and occasionally a gentle minerality. Gewurztraminer thrives in cool climates, with Alsace in France being its most iconic region, though it is also cultivated in Germany, northern Italy (notably Alto Adige), Austria, and select regions of New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Northwest in the United States.
Typically, Gewurztraminer is crafted in a dry to off-dry style; however, late harvest and vendange tardive versions can reach notable sweetness and complexity. It produces both still and, less commonly, sparkling wines, occasionally highlighted by a luscious, long finish.
Its distinctive profile makes Gewurztraminer an exceptional partner for spicy Asian cuisine, aromatic poultry dishes, rich pâtés, and strong cheeses such as Munster or Roquefort. Dishes featuring ginger, chilli, or subtle sweetness are splendidly complemented by Gewurztraminer’s bold and fragrant character.
