Fendant, known internationally as Chasselas, is a white grape variety highly esteemed in Swiss viticulture, particularly in the canton of Valais where it is most extensively cultivated. Displaying a subtle yet complex aromatic profile, Fendant wines tend to reveal delicate citrus notes—lemon and grapefruit—intermixed with white blossom, green apple, and a hint of flint. On the palate, they are typically light to medium-bodied with a refined minerality, crisp acidity, and a gentle, refreshing finish, sometimes with a characteristic spritz.
The Valais region is Fendant’s heartland, but the grape also flourishes in Switzerland’s Vaud and Geneva, along with select cooler sites in France and Germany. Fendant is most commonly vinified as a dry white wine, although it can also appear in slightly off-dry or sparkling versions, always prioritising freshness and purity.
Fendant’s versatility at the table is well-established. It is a classic match for traditional Swiss raclette and fondue, gracefully complementing the richness of melted cheese. Beyond this, it pairs beautifully with freshwater fish, light poultry dishes, crisp vegetable salads, or simply as an aperitif, making it a cherished companion to convivial gatherings.
