Red Grape Variety

Areni Noir is an ancient indigenous grape variety predominantly cultivated in the high-altitude vineyards of Armenia, particularly within the Vayots Dzor region. Noted for its exceptional resilience to extreme climatic conditions, Areni Noir produces wines that are both elegant and expressive. On the nose, these wines reveal a refined bouquet of red berries—particularly cherry and raspberry—complemented by delicate floral notes, hints of black pepper, and subtle nuances of earth and herbs. The palate is typically medium-bodied, offering vibrant acidity, fine-grained tannins, and layered flavours of wild berries, blackcurrant, sour cherry, and a gentle mineral undertone reflective of the volcanic soils. Areni Noir is most commonly vinified as a varietal red wine but also forms the backbone of several high-quality blends and, occasionally, rosé wines. The style ranges from fresh and youthful to complex, barrel-aged expressions with added depth and concentration. Areni Noir pairs remarkably well with grilled lamb, roasted duck, aubergine dishes, and mature hard cheeses, making it a versatile companion to both traditional Armenian cuisine and a wide spectrum of international fare.
