Rèze is a rare and historic white grape variety traditionally grown in the Valais region of Switzerland. The grape is principally celebrated for its delicate aromatics and subtle complexity. On the nose, wines made from Rèze typically reveal crisp notes of green apple, fresh pear, and white florals, underscored by faint hints of citrus zest and wet stone. The palate is light-bodied and refreshing, characterised by vibrant acidity, a clean mineral backbone, and restrained fruit flavours, sometimes evolving into nuances of almond or lightly toasted nuts with age.
The principal viticultural area for Rèze is the Swiss Alps, particularly in the cantons flanking the Rhône river, where the variety benefits from high-altitude vineyards and a cool continental climate. Traditionally, Rèze has been used for producing Vin des Glaciers, an oxidative alpine wine matured in oak barrels following a Solera process, resulting in a unique, sherry-like style.
Contemporary examples of Rèze are rare but prized for their freshness and elegance. Optimal food pairings include freshwater fish such as trout or perch, light alpine cheeses, seafood salads, and delicate poultry dishes, where the grape’s acidity and minerality elegantly complement subtle flavours.
