Lafnetscha is a rare white grape variety indigenous to Switzerland, predominantly cultivated in the Valais region. This intriguing varietal produces wines with a distinctive aromatic profile, often characterised by subtle floral notes, hints of fresh herbs, white peach, and citrus zest. On the palate, Lafnetscha wines are crisp and lively, offering a refreshing acidity balanced by delicate mineral undertones and a touch of salinity. These wines typically exhibit medium body with a clean, lingering finish.
Viticulture is centred in the Upper Valais, where the variety thrives in alpine climates and on rocky, well-drained soils. Lafnetscha is most commonly vinified as a dry, still white wine, though some producers may opt for a slightly off-dry style to enhance the grape’s natural fruit expression. The wines are generally intended for early consumption, though certain examples can develop added complexity with short-term bottle ageing.
Lafnetscha pairs exceptionally well with Swiss specialities such as raclette and fondue, as well as freshwater fish, shellfish, and vegetable-based dishes. Its vibrant acidity and mineral elegance also make it a fine companion to goat’s cheese and light appetisers.
