Marselan is a modern red grape variety, created in France in 1961 by crossing Cabernet Sauvignon with Grenache. In the glass, Marselan typically reveals a deep ruby colour and an expressive aromatic profile, featuring ripe red and black fruits such as cherry, plum, and blackberry, complemented by floral notes of violet and subtle hints of spice, liquorice, and sometimes herbal nuances. On the palate, Marselan wines are known for their suppleness and balance, displaying smooth, refined tannins and refreshing acidity, making them approachable yet structured.
Initially cultivated in the Languedoc and the southern Rhône valley, Marselan has since gained popularity in regions such as Provence, Spain, and increasingly in the New World, particularly China and Brazil. Marselan is most often vinified as a dry red wine, either as a single varietal or in blends, offering medium to full-bodied styles with good ageing potential thanks to its fine tannic structure.
Recommended food pairings for Marselan include roasted or grilled meats, duck, game, and dishes featuring Mediterranean herbs. Its balanced character and aromatic complexity also make it an excellent match for hard cheeses and rich vegetable stews.
