Crouchen is a relatively rare white grape variety, originally from the southwest of France but now more widely associated with South Africa and Australia. This varietal typically produces wines with a delicate aromatic profile, offering floral notes alongside subtle citrus and green apple undertones. On the palate, Crouchen is appreciated for its crisp acidity and light to medium body, often accompanied by refreshing flavours of lemon zest, ripe pear, and hints of herbaceousness, sometimes finishing with a touch of minerality.
While Crouchen is no longer prevalent in its native France, it thrives in South Africa—where it is sometimes known as Cape Riesling—and in select Australian wine regions such as the Riverina and Hunter Valley. Here, it is frequently used either for varietal wines or as part of blends, lending a vibrant freshness.
Typical styles range from dry and lively to off-dry expressions with gentle sweetness, making these wines highly approachable. Crouchen pairs elegantly with a variety of dishes, including light seafood, grilled chicken, fresh salads, and subtly spiced Asian cuisine. Its refreshing character and moderate alcohol make it an excellent choice for al fresco dining and casual entertaining.
