Prunelard is an ancient, rare red grape variety native to south-western France, particularly the Tarn department in the Occitanie region. This heritage grape is a parent of Malbec and is celebrated for its deep colour and robust character. On the nose, Prunelard offers an expressive aromatic profile, marked by ripe black fruit—plum, blackberry, and black cherry—accented with subtle hints of liquorice, violet, and gentle spice. The palate is similarly rich, displaying velvety tannins, vibrant freshness, and a persistent, structured finish.
Prunelard thrives in the Gaillac appellation, where a handful of dedicated producers have revived its cultivation. It is typically vinified as a varietal wine but can also contribute to blends, enriching them with depth and aromatics. The resulting wines tend to balance fruit intensity with savoury undertones and moderate alcohol.
When it comes to food pairing, Prunelard's bold yet elegant character suits roasted lamb, duck confit, and game dishes, as well as aged cheeses like Tomme or mature Comté. For a vegetarian option, consider it with grilled aubergine or mushroom ragouts seasoned with Provençal herbs, where the wine’s freshness and structure can elegantly complement the dish.
