Len de l’El, also known as Loin de l’Œil, is a rare white grape variety indigenous to the South-West of France, particularly thriving in the Gaillac appellation of the Tarn department. Its name, meaning “far from the eye”, refers to the grape’s long stalk, which positions the berry away from the vine’s bud. On the palate, Len de l’El produces wines with a bright, floral and fruity aromatic profile, featuring notes of white peach, jasmine, acacia blossom, and sometimes hints of citrus and tropical fruits. The wines are typically fresh and medium-bodied, offering a delicate, balanced acidity and a smooth, rounded mouthfeel.
Len de l’El is most commonly crafted in dry or off-dry styles, though it is also used in sweet, late-harvest or sparkling variations within the Gaillac region. The grape’s restrained alcohol and gentle structure make it ideal for showcasing the purity of its fruit and floral characters. As for pairing, Len de l’El complements a variety of dishes such as seafood, grilled river fish, light poultry, fresh goat cheese, and salads. Its fresh acidity also makes it an excellent match for subtly spiced Asian cuisine and citrus-based starters.
