Chasan is a relatively rare French white grape variety, born from a cross between Chardonnay and Listan. It is predominantly cultivated in the southern regions of France, particularly in the Languedoc and to a lesser extent in the Rhône Valley. Chasan wines are typically distinguished by their fresh, expressive aromatic profile, offering notes of white peach, ripe apple, citrus blossom, and subtle hints of honey or almond. On the palate, Chasan tends to be elegant and lively, with balanced acidity, a moderate body, and an appealing mineral undertone.
Most commonly vinified as a single varietal white wine, Chasan is also occasionally blended with other grapes to enhance freshness and aromatic complexity. The wines are usually dry and best consumed young to appreciate their lively fruit character and crispness. Thanks to its bright acidity and aromatic finesse, Chasan pairs admirably with a variety of dishes. It is a superb companion to seafood such as oysters or grilled prawns, white fish, light poultry dishes, salads, and goat’s cheese. It can also complement mildly spiced Asian cuisine, lending its fresh character to balance delicate flavours.
