Carinyena, known internationally as Carignan, is a red grape variety highly regarded for its deep colour, pronounced acidity, and robust tannic structure. Aromatically, Carinyena offers an enticing bouquet of black fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant, often complemented by notes of plum, violets, Mediterranean herbs, and a subtle spicy undertone of pepper and liquorice. On the palate, it delivers vibrant freshness, lively acidity, and a firm structure, delivering wines that are both rustic and complex with impressive ageing potential.
Primarily cultivated in the Priorat and Montsant appellations of Catalonia, as well as in parts of Languedoc-Roussillon in France, Carinyena thrives in warm, arid climates with rocky soils. While traditionally blended with Grenache and Syrah to add structure and depth, high-quality single varietal expressions have emerged, showcasing concentrated fruit, earthy minerality, and refined balance.
Typical Carinyena wines range from youthful, juicy, and medium-bodied reds to powerful, age-worthy examples with notable density. It pairs exceptionally well with grilled lamb, hearty stews, aged cheeses, and Mediterranean dishes featuring herbs and roasted vegetables, highlighting its earthy and bold character.
