The grape variety Mataro

Mataro, also known internationally as Mourvèdre or Monastrell, is a red grape variety renowned for its robust structure and distinctive aromatic complexity. The grape typically produces deeply coloured wines with prominent notes of dark fruits such as blackberry, black plum, and blueberry, complemented by undertones of dried herbs, earth, and occasionally hints of game or spice. On the palate, Mataro wines are celebrated for their full body, firm tannins, and pronounced acidity, lending themselves well to both early enjoyment and long-term cellaring.

Originating from Spain, Mataro has established itself in several key wine regions, including the Bandol appellation in Provence, France, and across the warm climates of Australia’s Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. In these regions, it thrives under the sun, developing rich concentration and depth.

Typical styles span from robust single varietal bottlings to complex blends, particularly in Southern Rhône ‘GSM’ (Grenache, Syrah, Mataro) styles. Mataro’s bold profile pairs excellently with hearty dishes such as roasted lamb, game meats, cassoulet, and mature hard cheeses, while its herbal nuances complement Mediterranean cuisine and barbecued vegetables.
