Côt, more widely known as Malbec, is a deeply coloured grape variety that produces robust, expressive wines celebrated for their vibrant character. In the glass, Côt wines often display intense aromas of black plum, blackberry, and ripe cherry, nuanced by subtle notes of violet, tobacco, and sometimes sweet spice. On the palate, they are typically full-bodied, offering velvety tannins and lively acidity, which balance bold flavours of dark fruits, black pepper, mocha, and a distinctive earthy undertone.
Originally native to southwest France, particularly the Cahors region—where it is referred to as Côt—this grape has also flourished in Argentina, which is now the leading producer globally. Other significant regions include the Loire Valley in France, as well as pockets of cultivation in Australia and the United States.
Typical styles range from youthful, fruit-driven expressions to more complex, oak-aged wines with considerable ageing potential. Côt’s ample structure and intensity make it an excellent partner for richer dishes. Recommended pairings include grilled or roasted red meats, lamb, duck, hearty stews, and mature cheeses, all of which complement the wine’s depth and distinctive character.
