Morrastel is a lesser-known, yet intriguing red grape variety, primarily cultivated in southern France, particularly within the Languedoc and Provence regions. Occasionally confused with Mourvèdre, Morrastel is genetically distinct and is, in fact, a crossing of Graciano and Bouschet Petit. Wines produced from Morrastel are characterised by their deep colour and medium to full body. The aromatic profile typically leans towards dark cherries, blackberries, and plums, complemented by subtle notes of spice, tobacco, and earthy undertones. On the palate, Morrastel offers a fine balance between vibrant acidity and firm tannins, resulting in wines that can age gracefully.
Morrastel is utilised both as a single varietal wine and in blends, bringing structure, depth of colour, and aromatic complexity. The typical style manifests as robust and richly flavoured, often exhibiting a nuanced savoury character. These wines pair exceptionally well with hearty dishes such as slow-cooked lamb, game meats, and rustic stews. Mature cheeses and Mediterranean fare featuring herbs and roasted vegetables also form excellent culinary matches, making Morrastel a versatile choice for food pairing in sophisticated dining contexts.
