The grape variety Complantée

Complantée is a unique and historic approach to viticulture rather than a single grape variety, primarily originating from several French wine regions, most notably Alsace, the Rhône Valley, and certain parts of Burgundy. The method involves the deliberate co-planting and simultaneous harvesting of multiple grape varieties within the same vineyard plot. As a result, wines labelled as "Complantée" present an intricate aromatic and flavour profile, drawing on the diverse characteristics of each grape involved. Typically, these wines exhibit a layered bouquet with notes that might range from orchard fruits and citrus to white flowers and subtle spice, depending on the varietal mix. On the palate, they tend to display remarkable balance: crisp acidity from early-ripening grapes is often harmonised by the richness and texture imparted by later-harvested varieties. Complantée wines are most commonly found as dry or off-dry whites, though some producers craft complex rosés and reds using the same technique. They pair particularly well with dishes that feature a medley of flavours, such as aromatic seafood, roast poultry with herbs, or soft cheeses, highlighting the wine’s interplay of freshness and depth.
