Persanne is a rare red grape variety primarily found in the Savoie region of France, notably around the villages of Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte and Montmélian. It produces wines with a deep ruby hue and a distinctive aromatic profile characterised by vibrant red berry fruits—such as raspberry and redcurrant—intertwined with herbal and floral notes, including wild violets and a subtle hint of white pepper. On the palate, Persanne wines are medium-bodied with refreshing acidity, fine-grained tannins and a slightly spicy, mineral-laden finish. The structure supports both early drinking and moderate cellaring.
Typically, Persanne yields pure varietal wines, though it may occasionally be blended with local Savoie grapes to enhance complexity. The wines are often unoaked to preserve their delicate, expressive fruit character and subtle earthy undertones.
Persanne pairs exceptionally well with Alpine cuisine: think Savoyard specialities like tartiflette, cured meats, roast poultry and mushroom-based dishes, as well as lighter game. Its lively acidity and fresh fruit notes also complement rustic charcuterie, aged cheeses such as Tomme de Savoie, and simple grilled vegetables, making it an excellent companion for a wide range of regional and seasonal fare.
