Romorantin is a rare and distinctive white grape variety, primarily cultivated in the Loire Valley of France, particularly within the tiny appellation of Cour-Cheverny. Renowned for producing expressive, nuanced wines, Romorantin displays an aromatic profile of orchard fruits such as apple and pear, layered with subtle hints of white flowers, honeysuckle, and occasionally dried herbs. On the palate, its wines are typically dry, showing vibrant acidity and a firm minerality, often complemented by citrus zest, quince, and a slightly waxy texture, lending remarkable length and complexity.
This varietal is almost exclusively found in the Cour-Cheverny AOC where it flourishes in sandy, siliceous soils, producing wines noted for their ageing potential and unique character. Romorantin wines are most commonly vinified in a crisp, unoaked style, but some producers experiment with barrel ageing, adding touches of toast and cream.
Romorantin pairs elegantly with seafood, shellfish, and river fish, as well as goat’s cheese and light poultry dishes. Its vivid acidity and minerality also make it an excellent match for vegetable terrines or dishes featuring fresh herbs, ensuring a memorable gastronomic experience.
