Vugava is an ancient white grape variety indigenous to the Croatian island of Vis, celebrated for its unique aromatic profile and rich heritage. The wines present an expressive bouquet brimming with ripe stone fruits such as apricot and peach, intertwined with notes of honey, citrus peel and delicate floral undertones. On the palate, Vugava offers a medium to full body, often displaying a silky texture balanced by refreshing acidity. Hints of tropical fruit and subtle mineral nuances contribute to its distinctive charm.
Principally cultivated on Vis, with smaller plantings across neighbouring Dalmatian islands, Vugava thrives in Mediterranean conditions, producing grapes that reach optimal ripeness. While still wines are the most common, Vugava is occasionally crafted into dessert styles or as part of blends to add aromatic complexity.
Vugava’s vibrancy and aromatic depth make it an ideal partner for Mediterranean cuisine. It pairs especially well with grilled white fish, shellfish, and risottos, as well as poultry dishes featuring herbs or citrus. Soft cheeses and light pasta dishes also complement its character, allowing the wine’s freshness and subtle sweetness to shine.
