Red Grape Variety

Alexandrouli is a distinctive Georgian grape variety, primarily cultivated in the Racha-Lechkhumi region of western Georgia. Prized for its role in traditional semi-sweet and sweet red wines, Alexandrouli exhibits an appealing aromatic profile characterised by ripe red cherry, damson, and subtle hints of wild strawberry, complemented by gentle floral notes and a touch of sweet spice. On the palate, it tends to offer medium body with soft, rounded tannins and a noticeable, succulent fruitiness balanced by a refreshing acidity. This lends itself to wines that are both approachable and capable of subtle complexity.

The grape is often blended with Mujuretuli to produce the renowned Khvanchkara wine, a naturally semi-sweet red celebrated for its aromatic intensity and harmonious palate. Single variety Alexandrouli wines can also showcase a vibrant ruby hue, fruit-forward character, and moderate alcohol content.

Recommended food pairings include mildly spiced charcuterie, roast duck with berry sauces, mature cheeses, and traditional Georgian dishes such as khinkali and chakapuli. Alexandrouli wines enhance dishes featuring sweet and savoury elements, highlighting both their lively fruitiness and their balanced structure. These wines are best enjoyed slightly chilled to emphasise their bright aromas and refreshing style.
