Khikhvi is an indigenous Georgian white grape variety, highly esteemed for its versatility and unique character. Renowned for its refined and expressive aromatic profile, Khikhvi typically offers delicate notes of ripe pear, yellow plum, and citrus blossom, layered with hints of honey and subtle herbal nuances. The palate is marked by a harmonious balance of freshness and richness, featuring a supple texture, moderate acidity, and, often, a gentle mineral undertone that contributes to its lingering finish.
Primarily cultivated in the Kakheti region—particularly in the fertile Alazani and Iori river valleys—Khikhvi thrives in the region’s diverse terroirs and temperate climate. While most commonly vinified as a dry white, the grape lends itself equally well to traditional Georgian qvevri (amphora) methods, producing both amber-coloured skin-contact wines and aromatic semi-sweet examples.
Typical Khikhvi wines are fresh, medium-bodied, and expressive, ranging from crisp, modern whites to deeply textured, amber qvevri styles. These wines pair excellently with a range of dishes: they complement grilled poultry, fresh seafood, herb-laden Georgian salads, and mild goat cheese. Their aromatic intensity and structure also make them a distinguished partner for spiced Middle Eastern cuisine and lightly smoked fish.
