Olaszrizling, often referred to as Welschriesling in other regions, is a versatile white grape variety primarily grown in Hungary, with notable plantings around Lake Balaton, the Tokaj region, and the Mátra and Eger districts. Despite its name, it bears no genetic relation to true Riesling, showcasing a distinct personality both aromatically and on the palate. Olaszrizling typically delivers delicate aromas of green apple, pear, citrus zest, and white flowers, occasionally accompanied by subtle almond undertones and a gentle herbal nuance. On tasting, it offers a refreshing acidity, a light to medium body, and a crisp, clean finish, sometimes accentuated by a faint mineral streak reflective of its terroir.
The grape excels in producing unoaked, dry white wines that emphasise purity and freshness, although late-harvest and botrytised sweet styles, particularly in the upper regions of Lake Balaton, demonstrate its adaptability. Traditionally, Olaszrizling pairs excellently with freshwater fish, seafood, light poultry dishes, and fresh salads. Its vibrant acidity and modest alcohol also make it a harmonious match with soft cheeses and vegetable-based starters, rendering it an ideal choice for contemporary European cuisine.
