Skopelitiko is a rare and distinctive red grape variety indigenous to the island of Skopelos in Greece’s Northern Sporades. Known for its refined aromatic profile, Skopelitiko wines often display an appealing bouquet of fresh red cherries, wild strawberries, and subtle floral notes, underpinned by hints of Mediterranean herbs and delicate spice. On the palate, these wines are typically medium-bodied with lively acidity, silky tannins, and a lingering finish marked by minerality and a gentle touch of savoury earthiness.
The grape thrives in the island’s mountainous terroir, benefiting from cool sea breezes and well-drained soils, which help preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. Beyond Skopelos, small plantings exist on neighbouring islands, but production remains highly limited.
Skopelitiko is most commonly crafted into elegant single-varietal reds or traditional blends with local varieties. These wines are noted for their finesse and freshness, occasionally offering subtle oak influence when aged in barrel. Rosé styles, with vibrant fruit and refreshing character, are also produced in small quantities.
Recommended food pairings include grilled lamb, tomato-based Mediterranean stews, roasted game birds, and aubergine dishes, as well as mature sheep’s cheeses, enhancing the grape’s bright fruit and layered complexity.
