White Grapes

Vilana is a distinguished indigenous white grape variety primarily grown on the Greek island of Crete. Revered for its fresh and lively character, Vilana wines typically display a bright, straw-yellow colour. The aromatic profile is marked by crisp citrus notes, notably lemon and grapefruit, underpinned by subtle floral hints such as white blossom and delicate herbal nuances. On the palate, Vilana delivers a clean, medium-bodied texture with pronounced acidity, offering flavours of ripe green apple, lime, pear, and occasionally a mineral undertone that evokes the island’s diverse terroir.

Vilana is most prominent in the central and eastern regions of Crete, particularly in the wine-producing areas of Heraklion and Lasithi. The grape thrives in the region’s Mediterranean climate, benefiting from abundant sunshine and cooling sea breezes.

Typical Vilana wines are produced in a dry, unoaked style, though some examples may show slight lees ageing for added complexity. These wines are prized for their freshness, balance, and versatility at the table. They make excellent partners for an array of Mediterranean dishes, harmonising beautifully with grilled white fish, seafood risotto, fresh salads, lightly salted cheeses such as feta, and vegetable-based starters.
