Liatiko is an ancient red grape variety indigenous to the island of Crete in Greece, renowned for producing expressive and unique wines. Aromatically, Liatiko offers an enticing bouquet of dried red fruits, such as cherry and strawberry, complemented by notes of sun-dried tomato, sweet spices, and subtle herbal undertones. On the palate, Liatiko is typically medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and modest tannins, displaying flavours of ripe raspberry, fig, cinnamon, and hints of earthiness, often leading to a persistent, slightly rustic finish.
The principal regions for Liatiko cultivation are within Crete, particularly in the zones around Heraklion and Rethymno, where the grape thrives in the island’s warm, arid climate and limestone-rich soils. Liatiko is crafted into a variety of wine styles, with the most notable being dry reds and the traditional sweet dessert wines of Sitia and Dafnes, the latter produced from partially dried grapes and known for their luscious, concentrated fruit profiles.
Liatiko wines pair exquisitely with Cretan cuisine, such as slow-cooked lamb, moussaka, aubergine dishes, hard cheeses, and spiced sausages. Sweeter styles make an excellent partner for chocolate desserts or caramelised nuts. Serve slightly chilled to enhance the vibrant character of the grape.
