Malagousia is a highly expressive white grape variety native to Greece, renowned for its aromatic complexity and elegance. On the nose, Malagousia displays an enticing bouquet of ripe peach, apricot, citrus blossom, green herbs and subtle notes of basil and mint, often underlined by an intriguing hint of white pepper or spice. The palate is typically medium-bodied, harmonious and vibrant, with refreshing acidity, a rounded texture, and flavours of stone fruit, melon, lime and occasionally grapefruit.
This variety thrives particularly well in northern Greek regions such as Macedonia and Thessaly, as well as in select parts of Central Greece and Euboea, where it has experienced a remarkable renaissance in recent decades.
Malagousia is predominantly crafted as a dry white wine, though some producers experiment with barrel fermentation or brief skin contact to add layers of complexity. It is valued for its purity of fruit and aromatic clarity but can also yield fuller-bodied, textured styles when vinified with lees ageing or partial oak maturation.
Ideal food pairings include fresh seafood, grilled prawns, Mediterranean salads, spring vegetables, light poultry dishes, and soft cheeses such as feta or goat’s cheese, making Malagousia particularly versatile for contemporary cuisine.
