Agiorgitiko is a distinguished indigenous grape variety from Greece, predominantly cultivated in the region of Nemea in the northeastern Peloponnese. Often referred to as the "Blood of Hercules," this versatile red grape produces wines noted for their deep ruby colour and captivating aromatics. The typical aromatic profile includes ripe red fruits such as cherry, raspberry, and plum, complemented by subtle notes of spice, black pepper, and sometimes hints of herbs and violets. On the palate, Agiorgitiko wines are medium to full-bodied, with supple tannins and balanced acidity, delivering flavours of red berries, clove, and sweet spices, frequently developing complexity and velvety texture with age.
Agiorgitiko thrives in the limestone-rich soils of Nemea but is also grown in regions such as Attica and Macedonia. It is used to create a range of wine styles, from fresh and fruity rosés and medium-bodied reds to more structured, oak-aged examples suitable for cellaring.
This grape pairs excellently with Mediterranean cuisine, such as grilled lamb, roast pork, moussaka, and tomato-based dishes. Mature examples are well-suited to game meats, hard cheeses, and herbed stews, making Agiorgitiko a versatile partner on the dining table.
