Negoska is a distinctive red grape variety primarily cultivated in Central Macedonia, Greece, particularly around the region of Goumenissa. Often blended with Xinomavro, Negoska imparts richness, colour, and supple fruit, resulting in wines cherished for their balance and unique character. On the nose and palate, Negoska typically exhibits ripe red berry and plum notes, complemented by gentle hints of black cherry, dried herbs, and subtle earthy undertones. Its moderate acidity and soft tannins create a medium-bodied structure, allowing the grape's juicy fruit profile and delicate spiciness to shine through.
Wines made from Negoska may be vinified as single varietals but find most acclaim in blends, notably the celebrated Goumenissa PDO reds, where Negoska brings approachability and roundness to the blend. While some examples are intended for early drinking, higher quality expressions display medium-term aging potential, developing savoury and leathery complexities over time.
Negoska pairs excellently with grilled lamb, roasted poultry, herb-laced Mediterranean dishes, and mild cheeses. It is particularly well suited to vegetable-based stews and dishes featuring aubergine or tomato, reflecting its innate harmony with the flavours of Greek cuisine. Serve slightly cool to enhance its refreshing character.
