Welschriesling is a distinguished white grape variety predominantly cultivated in Central and Eastern Europe, particularly flourishing in Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia. Despite its name, Welschriesling bears no relation to the renowned Riesling grape, yet it is celebrated for its unique aromatic and flavour profile. On the nose, Welschriesling exhibits lively green apple, citrus, pear and delicate floral notes, occasionally underlaid with hints of fresh herbs and white pepper. The palate is typically light- to medium-bodied, displaying vibrant acidity and a crisp, refreshing character, making it especially appealing in youthful expressions.
The grape is highly versatile, yielding a range of wine styles—from dry, zesty still wines to lusciously sweet late-harvest and botrytised dessert wines, most notably from Austria’s Burgenland region. Dry examples are prized for their purity and vivaciousness, while sweeter versions reveal layered nuances of stone fruit, honey and spice.
Welschriesling pairs exceptionally well with seafood, light fish dishes, fresh salads and mildly spiced Asian cuisine. The grape’s sweet renditions are superb with fruit-based desserts, soft cheeses and pâtés, offering a refined and memorable gastronomic experience.
