The grape variety Souzão

Souzão, a distinguished Portuguese grape variety, is renowned for its deep colour and robust structure, primarily cultivated in the Douro Valley and the Dão region. This grape produces wines with an intensely dark, inky hue and a vibrant aromatic profile marked by bold notes of blackcurrant, plum, wild berries, and subtle hints of spice and herbs. On the palate, Souzão delivers a lively acidity, full body, and firm tannins, often resulting in wines with remarkable ageing potential and a lingering, structured finish.

Traditionally used in Port blends, Souzão also shines in single-varietal reds and dry blends, imparting depth and complexity. Its unique combination of concentrated fruit and fresh acidity makes it particularly well-suited to both fortified and still wine styles.
