Regent is a modern, disease-resistant red grape variety, highly regarded for its adaptability and growing presence in cooler climate regions. On the nose, Regent typically exhibits an enticing aromatic profile of ripe blackberries, cherries, and plums, complemented by subtle notes of blackcurrant and a gentle hint of spice or dark chocolate. The palate is approachable and fruit-forward, characterised by soft tannins, moderate acidity, and a velvety texture. Some examples may reveal earthy undertones or nuances of violet, enhancing its complexity.
Predominantly cultivated in Germany, particularly in the Pfalz, Rheinhessen, and Ahr regions, Regent has also found success in the UK and parts of Switzerland. It is most often crafted into varietal red wines, both unoaked for youthful brightness and oaked expressions for greater depth and structure. Rosé styles are also produced, expectedly vibrant and fresh.
Regent pairs exceptionally well with a range of foods. Its fruit-driven character and soft tannins make it a fine companion for roasted poultry, grilled lamb, and game dishes. It also complements semi-hard cheeses and mushroom-based recipes, making it a versatile choice for contemporary dining.
